The Dayton men's basketball team will name the team's defensive player of the year award after the late Steve McElvene, a Flyer and New Haven player. The announcement was made Sunday at halftime of Dayton's 72-48 win over Richmond. McElvene died of a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at home in New Haven in May 2016. He had just completed his redshirt freshman season with the Flyers, setting a single-season record of 56 blocked shots. McElvene's family was on hand for the halftime program, which recognized McElvene and the more than 75 people who benefited from his tissue donation after his death.
